5 Health and Wellbeing Tips for Employees Working From Home

According to a recent poll we undertook, nearly 40% of employees are working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic while sat on a sofa or at a kitchen table.  Whilst this may be okay as a short term (emergency) solution, businesses cannot ignore the harmful long-term health and well-being ramifications of their employees working like this.

As such, and with many organisations not expecting the majority of their employees to return to the office until at 2021 we have put together 5 simple things that employees can do to help themselves stay healthy and safe while working from home:

1 – Use pillows to support your back and body

Sitting at one location for too long can lead to all sorts of health problems such as neck, shoulder, back pain, headaches and sore/aching muscles. Using pillows or cushions to help support your body when you are working will help to alleviate aches and pains.

2 – Take regular breaks

In an office environment meetings can be good as they normally result in employees moving from room to room or office to office, improving circulation.  When working from home it is all too easy to carry on working without moving, so scheduling regular breaks will help break the monotony and keep the blood flowing.

3 – Break up your day by spreading your work tasks out

If you can, consider spreading your tasks over the working day to give you some variety. Try to avoid having back to back calls as this can hamper your productivity when it comes to other important tasks. When you do have to have calls try to get up and walk around when talking on the phone if you can, this will help your circulation while you also work.

4 – Take regular exercise

Exercise is very important not just to your physical health but also to your mental health.  If it is safe to go outside with appropriate social distancing measures considered for some daily exercise, even better, as the fresh air will invigorate you more.

5 – Eat regularly and healthily

It is all too easy when working at home to snack on unhealthy, carbohydrate laden foods. To counter this, it is recommended to plan healthy meal breaks and drink plenty of water.
